The Island House located on Mackinac Island, MI is my favorite place to stay on the island. I haven’t been there in ages (10+??) but cannot wait to go back. There is a beauty to this island that takes your breath away, especially on the back side of the island which can be quiet (the time of year that we visit) with a rocky coast, beautiful beaches (especially at sunset). It’s a nice ferry ride from the mainland (Mackinaw City, MI for most) – great views. There are no cars on the island. You are greeted at the wharf by employees on bicycles that carry your bags. Not sure how they do it but wow! What a workout!
The rooms are well appointed. Everything you need is there. The staff is always welcoming and informative. I love to get up early, pour a coffee and sit in the rocking chairs on the very large porch. It’s early, it’s still dark, it’s quiet and usually it’s a little chilly, which makes me VERY happy!
You can spend your time going through shops and galleries, visit the Grand Hotel, wander the streets throughout the island and of course, take a bike ride around the island (my favorite time of year is near sunset) – astounding!!
Read about the history of the oldest hotel on Mackinac Island – this is a hotel that is near and dear to my heart. I have good memories of this place as a kid, and also as an adult. My husband and I have stayed a few times and one year my sister and I took my Mom after she was done with chemo treatments and right before she started radiation. They made our stay so special. We will never forget it. They are people who care and who have a passion for running a hotel – they deserve to go far and clearly The Island House has stood the test of time! Can’t wait to go back!
